Our Nordic tipis take inspiration from the kåta, the traditional home of the semi-nomadic Sami people, who are indigenous to northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.

Since its inception in 1989 and in the years that have followed, Tentipi has continually strived for perfection. Using traditional design principals, but coupled with modern materials, innovative features and the latest construction techniques, we have created a wide and versatile range of products.

Strong, Waterproof and Fire Retardant Canvas

The canvas used to produce all of our tents took three years to develop in close collaboration with our supplier. It is the most advanced fabric of its kind on the market. It has a special coating making it supremely waterproof and highly resistant to UV and mould.

Our canvases also meet all relevant international standards for fire retardancy, including UK, USA and Australia. The fire retardant properties do not degrade over time, which means the fabric doesn’t need to be re-proofed.

Another important point is that all of our tipi canvases are sewn in one piece, rather than the easier method of lacing. By using this method of production, we avoid the risks of water ingress associated with the lacing method.

Furthermore, in our Stratus 72 and Cirrus 72 canvases, there are two attachment points on each main pole. These add crucial stability to the canvas and help support our structural calculations.

Strong and UV Resistant Reinforcement Edge

The canvas along the bottom of the tent is where most wear occurs, but our reinforcement edge has higher UV resistance and is stronger than any other giant tipi product on the market.

Natural, Sustainable, Lab-tested Timber

Our beautiful wooden poles are as nature intended, simply de-barked, but not machined, stained or chemically treated. Slowly grown in sustainable forests in the far North of Scandinavia, the species of spruce we use for our poles is naturally immensely strong due to their very dense growth rings. Due to its high resin content, the species of spruce we use is naturally resistant to rot, which means they do not need to be treated with unpleasant chemicals.

Our poles have undergone rigorous lab testing to ensure that their specification fully supports our Structural Calculations.

Supported by Full Structural Calculations

We have fully verified Structural Calculations for our largest tipis, when built in different configurations. Produced by a firm of structural engineers, specialising in temporary fabric structures, using sophisticated computer modelling we can ensure compliance to international safety standards.

Innovative High Wind Device – The TipiStar™

Our innovative TipiStar is an internal wire device which adds stability and increases the wind loading capacity from 40.7mph to 62.6mph on a single Stratus 72, without compromising the aesthetics.

Our wind loading figures come from our detailed structural calculations that take into account the specific timber, fabric, hardware and construction method of our tipis. The TipiStar can be fitted during the build of the Stratus or Cirrus 72, or after the build is complete.

Sustainability

The best thing we can do for our planet is make long-lasting products that stand the test of time.

• Canvas built to last: To ensure our products last as long as they possibly can, we only use the highest quality and most durable materials on the market. We also offer a repair service.
• Sustainable Forest Management: Our pole production operates within the framework of sustainable forestry, carefully managed by the Swedish Forest Agency. For every tree harvested, two saplings or more are replanted, ensuring the continuity of Sweden’s forests. Our poles are carefully selected during harvesting – whilst perfect for our tent poles they are too small for traditional timber products like planks and boards and would previously have been destined for pulp. Because we utilise this timber and have it processed locally, we are creating jobs in rural areas and beautiful products that can be used for many years.
• Tentipi Circular: This is part of Tentipi’s efforts to protect the environment. Over the years we have been careful not to discard left-over, usable manufacturing materials and now we use them for completely new Tentipi products.
• Distribution: Sea and land-based transportation of our products is always our first choice for distribution. Air freight is only used as a last resort, on very rare occasions. We always try to combine deliveries to reduce our carbon footprint.
• Facilities Management: We constantly strive to reduce our environmental impact, but becoming more sustainable as a business is always going to be a work in progress. We are making our production and office facilities ever more energy efficient through responsible lighting, heating and travel decisions. We re-use, recycle and upcycle everything we can.
• Giving Back: We are committed to supporting organisations that share our environmental philosophy. Part of this commitment is to support the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and Vi Agroforestry
